List of countries by continent

208 countries & territories*, with capitals, flags and coordinates.

Find a country, check its capital and place it on the globe. This list brings together 208 countries and territories, grouped by continent and sorted alphabetically within each group. Every row includes a flag, a two-letter country code, the listed capital where available, and latitude and longitude for a country reference point.

208 is the directory total, including territories such as Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands. Each place appears once. How this compares with UN country counts ↓

Africa

57 countries & territoriesBack to top ↑

Start with the countries of Africa and their listed capitals, then use the coordinates to put each name in context. Compare Egypt and Kenya: how far north of the equator is each reference point? Try recalling Cairo and Nairobi before reading their rows. Include island entries in your practice, too, rather than concentrating only on countries you recognise on the mainland.

Asia

48 countries & territoriesBack to top ↑

Use this list of Asian countries and territories to connect country names, flags and capitals. Japan and Tokyo, or Thailand and Bangkok, offer familiar starting pairs; work outward to names you find harder to remember. Compare the latitude and longitude columns as you go. This directory groups Türkiye and Kazakhstan in Asia, while Russia appears in Europe under Hookito’s convention.

Oceania

14 countries & territoriesBack to top ↑

Oceania brings Australia, New Zealand and Pacific island entries into one group. Start with Australia and Canberra, New Zealand and Wellington, or Fiji and Suva, then learn a less familiar country-capital pair. Look carefully at the east and west labels when comparing longitudes. Nearby-looking numbers on opposite sides of the 180-degree meridian need more care than a simple numerical comparison.

South America

13 countries & territoriesBack to top ↑

Look up South American countries and territories, compare their flags and practise their listed capitals. Brazil and Brasília, Argentina and Buenos Aires, or Peru and Lima make useful starting pairs. Then compare the country coordinates: latitude helps you place a reference point north or south of the equator, while longitude adds its east-west position. Test those relationships before moving on to another continent.

Understanding the world list

How many countries are in this list?

Hookito’s directory contains 208 countries and territories. It is the same collection used by the random country generator and flag quiz, giving you a consistent set of names to browse, locate and practise. The total describes the places in this collection; it includes territories alongside countries.

Different country lists answer different questions. The United Nations lists 193 member states and two non-member observer states, the Holy See and the State of Palestine. Counting those two groups together gives 195. Hookito’s broader directory has a different scope, so its 208 entries should not be read as 208 sovereign states or as a UN membership list.

Antarctica is excluded from this directory. Each included place appears once, even when it has connections to more than one continent. The numbers beside the continent links therefore add up to the directory total.

How the countries are grouped by continent

The six groups are Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America. Central America and the Caribbean sit within North America. Oceania includes Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific island entries in the collection. This gives you a way to study one part of the world at a time while keeping every row on one page.

Some countries span continental boundaries, and different references make different grouping choices. Hookito places Russia in Europe, Türkiye and Kazakhstan in Asia, and Egypt in Africa. Cyprus, Georgia and Armenia appear in Europe. These are the groupings used in Hookito’s directory; you can still look up a place by name if you expected to find it elsewhere.

Start with the continent jump links when you want to browse a region. Use Find on page when you already know a country, capital or two-letter code. Countries are alphabetical within their groups, making it easier to return to a name and compare it with the entries around it.

Reading the country names, flags and capitals

Country names and two-letter codes

Each row begins with the name used in Hookito’s existing country data. The two-letter code underneath is a compact identifier: BR for Brazil, JP for Japan and FR for France, for example. It helps you recognise the same entry across Hookito’s picker and quizzes, even when another reference uses a different spelling or name.

Flags as a visual memory cue

Look at the arrangement of colours, stripes and symbols before reading a country’s name. You can use the flag to build a second association alongside its capital. If an emoji flag looks different on another device, focus on the name and code to identify the row; flag artwork depends on your device and fonts.

Listed capitals and missing values

The directory has a capital value for 200 entries. The remaining 8 show “Not listed”, meaning the data contains no capital for that row. This describes a missing value rather than saying the place has no capital or seat of government. Names and capitals are carried over from Hookito’s existing dataset.

One capital field per entry

Use the capital column to practise country-city associations, while remembering that a single field can simplify a more detailed situation. A country may have different cities associated with different government roles. For a formal reference or a question about a specific role, check an authoritative source for that place.

How to read the latitude and longitude

Country coordinates help turn a name into a position on Earth. Read latitude first: N means north of the equator and S means south. Then read longitude: E means east of the prime meridian and W means west. Compare latitude to get a sense of north-south position before using longitude to add the east-west part.

A worked example: Brazil

The directory lists Brazil at 10.00° S, 55.00° W. That reference point is south of the equator and west of the prime meridian. Its listed capital is Brasília, but the displayed coordinates locate the country reference point. They are the same coordinates used to centre the globe when Brazil is selected in the country picker.

A country covers an area, so a single coordinate pair cannot describe its outline, islands or every city within it. Treat these points as approximate orientation aids. Extra decimal places make the displayed notation consistent; they do not turn the values into survey measurements or precise capital locations.

Give a country name some context

Use the list to learn countries and capitals

Choose a manageable set of entries, then switch between recalling a name, recognising a flag and locating a place. A short round with a clear question gives you something specific to check. You can repeat the same entries later or move to a different continent when you want a change.

Practise country-capital pairs

Take five countries from one continent. Cover the capital column and write down your guesses, then check each answer against the list. Keep the pairs you missed for another pass. When you want multiple-choice questions and answer feedback, play Guess the Capital; the game currently draws from the worldwide pool.

Look closely at the flags

Pick two flags that look similar and describe what sets them apart: colour order, stripe direction or the position of a symbol. Associate each design with its country name before moving to the next pair. Then try Guess the Flag to practise recognition without the country name beside the flag.

Build a location challenge

Compare two country reference points and predict which is farther north. For points in the same hemisphere, try an east-west comparison too. Check the coordinates, then open Hookito’s interactive Earth globe to look around the region. For an unexpected starting point, let the random country generator choose a place for you.

Go from geography to cultures

A country name can open a more specific question. Which languages would you hear in one of its cities? What music comes from a particular region? Who is a local artist or author you could learn about? Choose one question and research a named place, person or tradition. Countries contain many communities and experiences; a flag and a capital are the beginning of that discovery.

Questions about using the country list

Are the countries listed in alphabetical order?

Yes. Names are alphabetical within each continent, using the spellings displayed in this directory. If you know a country name but are unsure of its group, use your browser’s Find on page to search the whole directory. On a computer, the usual shortcut is Ctrl+F or Cmd+F.

Can I find a country if I only know its capital?

Yes. Search this page for the capital’s name and read the country beside it. Use part of the name if spelling or accents differ from what you expected. Only capitals already listed in Hookito’s dataset can be found this way; an entry marked “Not listed” has no capital value to search.

How do I enter these coordinates into a map?

Check whether your map accepts latitude followed by longitude in decimal degrees. In signed decimal notation, north and east are positive, while south and west are negative. For example, Brazil’s displayed country reference point of 10.00° S, 55.00° W becomes -10, -55. This locates the reference point, not the capital or a country boundary.

Does a country flag tell me which language people speak?

A flag identifies the country or territory entry shown here. It does not describe everyone’s language or culture. Use the place name as a starting point to research languages, local communities and cultural traditions separately, rather than treating a flag as a language label.

Do I need an account to use the country list?

No. The full list, capitals, codes and coordinates are free to read without an account. The directory also works without JavaScript. Hookito’s linked flag and capital games need JavaScript to play, and their interactive Earth globe needs WebGL.
