Can you tell which country a painting comes from?

Answer to find the country on Earth.

How to play the painting quiz

You see one painting and choose which of four countries it comes from. After your answer you learn its title, artist and year, the globe turns to the country and a link leads to the painting in that country’s gallery.

  1. Look before you read. Notice the clothing, the landscape, the buildings and the style of painting.
  2. Choose one answer. Your first selection locks the options and the correct country is shown.
  3. Read the credit. The painting’s title, artist, licence and a link to its Wikimedia Commons file appear with the answer.
  4. Continue when ready. Use Next after an answer, or Skip before answering. A skip changes neither total.

Which paintings and countries are included?

The paintings are public domain works from Wikimedia Commons that Hookito has checked before showing them. The answer is the country recorded as each painting’s origin, and the wrong answers are always countries that also have paintings here.

Keep discovering: browse every gallery by country, or try Guess the Flag, Guess the Country or the geography quiz hub.

Questions before you play

Where do the paintings come from?

They are public domain paintings from Wikimedia Commons, from about 50 countries. After each answer the quiz shows the licence and a link to the source file.

What does the country mean for a painting?

It is the country recorded as the painting’s origin in Hookito’s data, usually where the artist worked or the work is most associated with. Artists travelled and moved, so some answers are debatable; use the gallery link to read more.

Do I need to know art history?

No. Look for clues: the clothing, the landscape, the architecture, the style. A wrong answer is a way to learn where a painter or movement belongs. There is no timer and no score beyond this visit.

Why am I seeing the same painting again?

Each round draws from a set of a few hundred paintings that is refreshed daily, so a painting can come back after a few rounds. The next question never repeats the previous painting or country.
